A Westbury-on-Trym woman is the first person to win the St Peter’s Hospice cash prize super draw scooping £5,000 in the process.
Doreen Hyde now plans to go on holiday and treat some friends having bought a £1 ticket a few weeks ago.
The first time the draw included a cash prize, the hospice managed to sell 33,000 tickets. It meant the odds of winning the £5,000 were considerably less than the national lottery* with all money raised from ticket sales staying local and going direct towards the hospice.
For Doreen it was a bolt out of the blue to receive the call telling her she had one and having been involved in a nasty car accident only a week ago was the boost she needed.
With Doreen’s husband receiving help from the hospice’s community nurses before he sadly passed away back in 1993, she always wanted to give something back to the hospice.
An active volunteer at the hospice for the past 16 years, Doreen helps out at some of the hospices’ shops as well as the In-Patient Unit.
Doreen said: “I was totally overwhelmed when I found out I had won. I needed some good news having had my first car crash after 55 years of driving!
“St Peter’s Hospice is a remarkable place and I really cannot imagine people’s lives without hospice care. It must be horrific to go through the loss of a loved one without the support that the hospice provides and the care given to patients.”
Anna Ross, lottery manager at St Peter’s Hospice said: “We had a great response to this year’s super draw and I’d like to thank everyone who bought a ticket. All money raised is vital and goes towards caring for adults with incurable illnesses.
“For Doreen, who has given so much to the hospice as a volunteer, it’s wonderful news and the main prize couldn’t go to a nicer person.
“We were very excited to introduce the cash prize this year and it seems to have attracted the desired response from the people of Bristol.
“The great thing about this Super Draw is that, unlike national lotteries, all money raised stays within the local area, helping people in the local community. A higher proportion of the ticket price goes back to the hospice as well which after print and admin costs equals 60p in every pound.”
As Bristol’s only adult hospice St Peter’s Hospice cares for local people with incurable diseases, giving them a better quality of life. All care is provided free of charge but the NHS contribute just 23% of the £6 million needed to run the hospice yearly, meaning events like the Super Draw are essential.
Last year the hospice cared for 2,000 patients in the region and supported over 6,000 family members, including children.
* The odds of winning £5,000 with the National Lottery Thunderball are one in 620,046.
