Our Clevedon-based charity shop has walked away with two national awards at a prestigious event held in London.
Part of the Third Sector Excellence Awards, the St Peter’s Hospice shop on Old Church Road in Clevedon won the Charity Trading and Social Enterprise categories seeing off competition from some major national third sector organisations.
The first category won, the Charity Trading, was awarded to a charity that has made effective use of its brand, knowledge or assets to increase income from its trading activities.
The second, Social Enterprise category, was awarded to a social enterprise that has increased its income or ability to meet its social goals through innovations in its business model.
Andrew Hufford, St Peter’s Hospice’s commercial director said: “It is fantastic to see the work that our staff and volunteers do every day recognised on a national level. There is a real skill to charity retailing and the good returns we see from our shops show that everyone is pulling together to maximise the amount raised for the hospice.”
The success of the Clevedon shop follows the merging of two smaller shops into one larger unit which resulted in an increase in profit by nearly £100,000 in the first year. This represented a 43% increase in profit for the two smaller Clevedon shops the previous year.
It also increased the shop’s profile because of the positioning and size of the shop in the High Street.
Andrew added: “A big thank you must go the team at Clevedon who have worked hard together during and after the merger and made such a huge contribution to these fantastic awards.”
St Peter’s Hospice, which has 46 shops within a 12 mile radius of Bristol, is the city’s only adult hospice and cares for local people with incurable diseases, giving them a better quality of life.
