The End of Life Care Strategy has informed the need for all practitioners to be skilled and competent in the delivery of End of Life Care.
This three-day course is aimed at registered nurses who regularly work with individuals at end of life in hospice, hospital or community settings and aims to develop skills and confidence in the management of symptoms at end of life. It is informed by the common core competencies for end of life care. (Skills for Health, Skills for Care) and supports the End of Life Care Strategy.
Course content includes: End of Life Care in context
Understanding the principles of assessment and symptom control:
- Pain management
- Management of breathlessness
- Management of GI symptoms, including nausea and vomiting and constipation
- Management of terminal agitation
- Medical emergencies in End of Life Care
Current practice in End of Life Care:
- Use of End of Life Care Pathways
- Indications for the use of syringe driver
Objectives:
Be able to:
- Discuss the principles of assessment
- Recognise common symptoms at end of life (Pain, nausea, vomiting, agitation, breathlessness, constipation)
- Discuss a broad range of symptom management strategies
Course dates and venue:
This course takes place at St Peter's Hospice, Brentry, Bristol on the following dates:
Winter Term: All sessions run from 9.30am - 4.15pm on the following Thursdays: 1st November, 15th November and 29th November 2012
Spring Term: All sessions run from 9.30am - 4.15pm on the following Tuesdays: 9th April, 23rd April and 7th May 2013
Successful achievement of the certificate requires attendance on all three dates
Course cost:
This three-day certificate course costs £225 per person, including refreshments and lunch. Please inform us if you have any special dietary requirements
